SAMEDA was founded in 1986 by about 10 San Diego area dancers. They wanted a better source of information about workshops, events, classes and visiting instructors. The group met monthly rotating through members’ homes.
Dance instructors provided mailing lists, and SAMEDA sent out a survey to the San Diego belly dance community. The survey results showed that most dancers wanted a newsletter, which ultimately resulted in The Papyrus.
Within one year, SAMEDA grew to about 100 members.
(Keeping up with the times, The Papyrus is now sent out as an email blast rather than paper copies.)
